Sketchbook

Week 1--Contour Drawing
               Choose 1 inorganic object (table, chair, box, laptop etc.)
               Choose 1 organic object (flower, bag, sheet, etc.)
               Create composition with objects---They can be relating in space but don't have to be
               Think about size, line quality, weight of object and line

Week 2--Interior or Exterior two point perspective drawing

Week 3--Exterior building two point perspective drawing--include 2 full sides of building
               and interesting detail.  Feel free to zoom out and draw the surrounding area.

Week 4--Drawing of your choice

Week 5--



The sketchbook assignment assigned Sept. 27th is due Wed October 6th in class.
Sketchbooks will be turned in the following Monday October 11th.

1) 5 9"x12" "thumbnails" of outdoor atmospheric perspective
             keep in mind= overlapping, diagonals, rule of thirds
Attached is an example of what I am looking for.  I expect more time to be spent on yours.
The "thumbnails" are 9"x12" line drawings with as much detail as a smaller thumbnail would have.

2) Choose thumbnail you find most successful finish the drawing with detail and atmospheric perspective in mind.
             keep in mind= dark to light
                                  using different materials (hard/soft pencils,vine/compressed charcoal)
                                  using pattern to describe distance
                                  attention to pressure !!!!
The final atmospheric perspective drawing should be (1) 9"x12" 
3) Organic drawing of your choice  
 The organic drawing should be (1) 9"x12"


NOTE= have sketchbook on hand to capture good compositions (take picture with digital if you can and bring in your camera)  If rain is an issue, find a spot under an awning or indoors by a large window looking out. 

Week 6- Life Drawing of a tree with soft pastels 


Week 7- go to art section in UCONN library--2nd floor--turn left and head to the last room. 
Flip through art books and jot down artists you like (any artists--sculpture, photography, etc) 
Look for a drawing with interesting mark making that you really like and copy it into your sketchbook.  Please choose a drawing that takes at least as much time to draw as the Van Gogh drawing.  Feel free to draw from more after.
Try to observe the way the artist made the drawing (did he/she draw with the eraser? what is the most logical way to achieve the same effects as the artist? Take note of material use)
Learn a little about the artist from the art book or online and jot it down in your sketchbook (time period, location, factoids.)
Please photocopy the drawing you chose to copy.

F.Y.I--there is a small comfortable room with couches to the right of the art section
the shelves in this room contain contemporary art catalogs and magazines.  You could also find a drawing in one of the magazines.

Week 8- Still life drawing with objects of your choice. Shine a light source on still life. Include at least 4 objects. Focus on shading by smudging with charcoal then using eraser to pull out highlights, draw with eraser, use hatchmarks to show direction, shadow, and life.

Course Description

This course will focus on a continued development of formal and conceptual aspects of drawing utilizing a variety of media and formats.   We will cover these aspects by drawing from still life, landscape, and architectural subjects. 
Topics to be covered:
1,2,3 point perspective, atmospheric perspective, line quality (cross contour, crosshatch, weight, speed), light and shadow, composition (dynamic rectangles, spatial relationships, negative space), texture, symbolism, abstraction, and art history influences.

Goal: To enhance drawing possibilities through use of technique, medium, and concept in order to help you pursue your own artistic ambitions.
Means of arriving at our goal:
·             Restate, focus, map and intensify.
·             Free your hand action, and then learn to control it.
·             Convey the illusions of light, depth and texture.
·             Stimulate your imagination through “creative play”

Attendance

It is important that you arrive to class on time and prepared with appropriate drawing materials and an open mind for learning and exploring.  This class builds upon drawing concepts throughout the semester and in class assignments are turned in for review.  Although assignments may be made up, numerous absences will be detrimental to your growth and understanding.  Absences are only acceptable due to illness and emergencies. If you are ill and cannot attend class, please send me an email. 

Sketchbook

Your sketchbook provides you with the opportunity to work independently.  Assignments will be given weekly and will primarily allow you to choose your own subject matter, location, and medium.  The sketchbook is an avenue for you to practice, explore, and hopefully enjoy.  Be creative and have fun!  Feel free to use your sketchbook to doodle on your own and jot down ideas and lessons from class.

Music

I will play music in class.  If you choose, you may wear headphones but make sure the class cannot hear your music and that you can hear me, no matter where I am.  I will be helping students individually by walking around the room.  It is beneficial to your progress that you are able to here some of the comments made to other students.

Grades

Grades are based on the following:

·         In class assignments will be turned in for review (fulfillment of requirements, formal technique,  conceptual issues- where applicable) average will make up 50%
·         Sketchbook (fulfillment of requirements, formal technique, conceptual issues- where applicable, composition bonus) 20%
·         Final drawing 10%
·         How you work in class including attentiveness and participation during critiques 10%
·         your growth in terms of understanding the content of the course 10%

All assignments can be redone and turned in for a new grade.
